The full saga of the Crypto Con Lawyer, Cal Evans of Gresham International.
In 1558, financier Sir Thomas Gresham warned Queen Elizabeth I that debasing England's coinage was driving its fine gold out of the realm. People spent the bad money and hoarded the good. 3 centuries later, in 1858, economist Henry Dunning Macleod named the principle after him: bad money drives out good.

Bad Money, Bad Actors
The Principle Behind Gresham's Law and the Long Delay of Its Adoption
The principle was understood by Aristophanes in 405 BC, analyzed by Oresme and Copernicus, and implicit in Gresham's 1558 warning, yet it was named only in 1858 and its remedies were adopted late and in pieces.
So why did it take so long to fix? Not because people didn't understand the problem. Every fix took money out of someone's pocket, and those people fought back: kings who watered down their coins, crooks who shaved and faked them, and today, sellers of fake degrees and professionals who got too cozy with the boards meant to police them.
